How do I find my state proof of tax exempt status paperwork?

To prove your tax exempt status, you'll need documentation from either the IRS or your state. To request documentation from the IRS, call the IRS at (877) 829-5500 and request a letter confirming your nonprofits status as a church and your EIN number. This letter may take awhile to come so you might be able to get something faster by downloading documentations from your state.

Not every state makes this documentation easy to find and some may charge a process ing fee for you to access a copy of it. Here's my best attempt to make this easy (or at least easier) on you.

If you can't find your church in your state's database, you may need to contact your local Secretary of State's office to find out how to get your documents.

In some cases there won't be a file you can download and you'll need to save the file (or the contents of a page) as a pdf. If you're not sure how to do that, check out this tutorial.
